City gears up for Wipro Marathon

A brainchild of the Chennai Runners group, the run is expected to see more participation this year

Around 12,000 runners will take part in the third edition of Wipro Chennai Marathon scheduled on December 7.

The event, a brainchild of the Chennai Runners group that has been promoting running in the city for many years now, is expected to see more participation this year, compared to its previous editions.

The event comprises of three categories: full marathon, half marathon and a 10-km run.

While the full marathon (42 km) will kick off at 4 a.m., the half marathon (21 km) and the 10-km run will begin at 5.15 a.m. and 7 a.m., respectively. The top five runners who manage to finish the full marathon will be given prize money of Rs. 50,000, Rs. 40,000, Rs. 30,000 and Rs 20,000 (for the last two places), respectively. The organisers said the runners would run past the city’s most important landmarks before they cross the finish line.

The organisers said that a special application (radio frequency identification) will be used to track time, and provide official and personal timing.
