Senior teachers of schools run by the Chennai Corporation recollect a time when schools reported only around 50 per cent pass percentage. The class XII results for 2013 on Thursday with 25 of the 32 schools reporting 80 per cent pass percentage demonstrate an improvement in achievement levels of students.
Over the past decade, Chennai Schools have consistently shown improvement in their performance. In 2005-06 only 70.7 per cent of students passed but in 2013 that has gone up to 84.81 per cent.
According to data provided by the Chennai Corporation in 2008-09, there were only 27 HSS schools and of these only 14 got more than 80 per cent pass percentage and in that year the pass percentage was 78.1.
This year was special for Chennai Schools as one student, D. Selvajothi got a State rank in Geography scoring 198 marks and two students have cleared the JEE mains.
Cheques presented
Mayor Saidai Duraisamy, who presented cheques worth Rs. 1 lakh to two schools on Thursday for getting cent percent pass, said that last year the Chief Minister had announced 29 schemes for school children. Chennai School students get free uniforms, books, geometry boxes, footwear and bags from the State government.
“This result has been possible due to hard work over the past four months. This year we will start coaching our students much ahead of that,” he said.
Award
Each of the four toppers of Chennai Schools will get Rs. 25,000 per year towards payment of fees if they take up any professional course. School toppers will get Rs. 1,500 each.
