Fearing that her husband might misuse gold jewellery and cash kept at their home, a 36-year-old woman made a false complaint that the valuables were robbed by a stranger from the house in Madambakkam near Tambaram on Friday.
During interrogations, she confessed to police that she had hidden the jewellery at her home and gave a false complaint to the Selaiyur police station.
Suburban police officials told reporters on Tuesday that Bindu (36) was a resident of Ambika Nagar, Madambakkam.
Her husband K.J. Babu was running a plastic moulding unit in the Tirumudivakkam Industrial Estate and the couple have a son and a daughter.
In her complaint, she said a stranger attacked and tied her up for nearly three hours on Friday.
A dog squad and finger print experts visited the scene of crime, but were unable to pick up clear clues. A police team even launched a search for the suspect in different places. As they suspected something fishy, police interrogated Bindu, who spilled the beans that she had given a false complaint.
She added that after her marriage with Babu in 1995, he married another woman in 2005 and had a child from the second marriage.
Over the past few years he had invested in the share market and suffered losses.
She complained that he was neglecting her and their two children and spending all his money for his second family living in Chromepet. Her husband did not even call on her when she was unwell recently, she said.
Fearing that her husband would spend all the savings and misuse the jewellery, she hid jewellery weighing about 18 sovereigns and Rs.5.52 lakh cash in the kitchen before lodging a false complaint.
Police recovered the 18 sovereigns and another 25 sovereigns that she had pledged in a pawn shop and also the cash intact.
