The Madras High Court on Tuesday granted an interim stay of the operation of a notice issued by the RDO, Ponneri, to convene a meeting of the Sholavaram panchayat union council on Wednesday, when a motion of no-confidence is to be taken up against the chairman.
Justice K. Venkataraman passed the order on a petition filed by the chairman of the local body, P.S. Gopinathan.
In the writ petition, filed through counsel V. Ayyadurai and M. Velmurugan, Mr. Gopinathan said he was elected chairman in the election in October 2006. He submitted that the RDO had not convened the meeting on the earlier date of July 7, to consider the motion, in accordance with law. The meeting had been abruptly adjourned to July 28. The entire proceedings initiated against him was actuated by motivation besides being without jurisdiction and in contravention of the requirements of law.
