February 16, 2011 01:35 am | Updated November 17, 2021 03:46 am IST - NAGAPATTINAM:

Tension prevailed at Akkarapettai fishing habitation here on receipt of information that about 106 fishermen from Nagapattinam were allegedly intercepted by Sri Lankan fishermen in the high seas and handed over to Sri Lankan Navy at Paruthithurai in Sri Lanka.

The allegation has been sourced to a call reportedly from one of the apprehended fishermen along the Sri Lankan coast.

According to the Akkarapettai fisherfolk, the fishermen had ventured into the sea in 18 boats on February 12 and were scheduled to touch the shores here on Tuesday. According to Akkarapettai sources, fisher folk across fishing habitations have announced a strike from Wednesday.
