Houses handed over to tsunami-affected fishermen

Houses constructed for fishermen in Chinnakuppam near Cuddalore village on the East Coast Road by Christian Missions Charitable Trust, Chennai, were handed over to the beneficiaries recently.

Donations from philanthropists

The houses, each measuring 340 sq.ft and costing around Rs.3.5 lakh, were constructed with donations collected by the CMCT from philanthropists all over the world, while the land measuring around 7.5 acres was bought by the beneficiaries themselves.

The Trust, according to official sources, decided to take up this project after the local people requested the organisation to provide concrete houses to all of them though only 36 huts or houses were destroyed in tsunami.

The chairman, CMCT International Board, John Speirs declared open the ‘Bethany Nagar' in the presence of founder-president, CMCT, Colleen M. Redit and the Madras High Court Judge, Ramasubramaniam, at a function held at Chinnakuppam.
