The Chennai Corporation on Saturday demolished a house built on a road in Thiruvanmiyur.
The action was taken following verification of revenue records by officials of the civic body.
According to the officials, the verification was ordered following a disagreement between people belonging two communities over the road, also an approach road to a burial ground.
The investigation of the issue brought encroachment to light, according to officials.
The 1,800-sq-ft house was built 15 years ago on the Corporation's land which was supposed to be used as a link road connecting Kannappa Nagar First Cross and East Coast Road.
The civic body had earlier issued a notice under Section 220 of the Chennai City Municipal Corporation Act, 1919 which prohibits obstructions in streets.
The owner of the house on the encroached land was not able to give any explanation or provide documents to establish ownership, said officials.
A large number of police personnel were deployed during the demolition. No untoward incident was reported.
