Upalokayukta pulls up BBMP, BMRCL

June 04, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:34 am IST - Bengaluru:

Upalokayukta Subhash B. Adi has pulled up both Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) for “indulging in blame game” rather than tackling the massive amounts of debris dumped along metro lines.

At a hearing on Wednesday called following a complaint by B.PAC, representatives from BBMP and BMRCL did not turn up. Mr. Adi said this showed “scant respect to the concerns of the people and disrespect to the institution of the Lokayukta”.

B.PAC had submitted nearly 700 photos of garbage underneath both metro lines in their complaint on March 24. However, in their response, BBMP and BMRCL shrugged responsibility and blamed each other.

During the hearing on Wednesday, B.PAC submitted 250 images showing piles of waste and the ensuing traffic jams and hygiene issues.

The Upalokayukta has given the two departments an ultimatum of 15 days to submit a compliance report. “Otherwise, they (BBMP Commissioner and BMRCL Managing Director) will be directly held responsible for the consequence,” states the order. The next hearing is on June 18.
