The three pothole-related deaths of motorists on Mysuru Road have exposed the apathy of the civic body’s inaction. What is worse, however, is that a resident of Rajarajeshwarinagar had alerted the civic authority a fortnight ago about the condition of the roads, but in vain.
Irked by the condition of the road, 24-year-old Sushmitha Sundaresh, a communication professional who travels every day from Rajarajeshwarinagar to Sarjapur Road, tweeted about the issue along with photographs. The Bangalore Traffic Police asked her to get in touch with Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) officials.
After lodging a complaint, she was told that she would get a response in two days, but a fortnight later, she has not got any response. She has made repeated calls to five officials in the BBMP who are passing the buck.
“The stretch between Nayandahalli and R.R. Nagar is pathetic and filled with potholes. The road was already bad due to the metro construction. The recent rains have increased potholes,” she said.
She said that covering a five-kilometre stretch between Nayandahalli junction and R.R. Nagar arch takes about 45 minutes after 10 p.m. “It is worse during the peak hours,” she says. She says she is ‘petrified’ to drive on the stretch as she does not know how deep the potholes are. “In fact, they are not even potholes. They are craters,” she adds.
Ms. Sundaresh says that even last week, she saw a motorist who was injured as he missed seeing a pothole. “Nobody is bothered about it. I even made attempts to call city in-charge Minister K.J. George several times, but I have not been able to reach him,” she said.
