Widespread rain accompanied by thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds wreaked havoc across the city on Sunday night.

At least 24 trees were reported to have been uprooted across the city. According to BBMP officials, five trees came down in Malleswaram and two near Cauvery underpass. Trees and branches also came down in Kengeri,Vajayanagara, Basavanagudi, Padmanabhanagar, RMS Colony Bhattarahalli, Jayamahal and Dasarahalli. Damage to vehicles due to tree falls was reported in some places.

A hoarding came down on a BMTC bus in BTM Layout. The conductor was reportedly injured.

Several roads in BTM Layout, Shantinagar and Majestic, and the Cauvery underpass were inundated.

Vehicular movement, including that of ambulances, was disrupted in several places due to tree falls and water-logged roads.

Mahesh, who was travelling from M.G. Road to Hebbal, said, “There was a jam from Cunningham Road till Malleswaram. Even though I took many detours, traffic moved at a snail’s pace as everyone was taking alternative routes. Sampige Road was almost cut off.”

Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy reportedly directed BBMP Commissioner N. Manjunath Prasad to take necessary precautionary measure to prevent any rain related accidents and ensure relief works are initiated as soon as possible.

The IMD has forecast rain or thunder showers in the city over the next few days.
