The 32-km Hosur Road stretch is not only one of the busiest roads in the city, but has the notoriety of being the most dangerous as well. The traffic police attribute the high number of accidents to poor maintenance of the highway.

The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has outsourced maintenance of the road to Bengaluru Elevated Toll Ltd. (BETL). However, the police officers lament that the company has neither maintained the road nor does it patrol the stretch regularly.

Taking serious note of the bad roads and rise in the number of accidents, the Electronics City Traffic Police have written a letter to BETL. They have warned BETL authorities that they will be booked as co-accused in all cases of accidents occurring on Hosur Road if the road is not repaired immediately. “There are at least 10 potholes and deep craters every half a km. These not only pose a danger to people on two-wheelers but also slow down traffic, especially when it rains,” said a police officer.

Many accidents involve hapless pedestrians as the owners of commercial establishments remove the barricades between the main carriageway and the service road. To contain the problem, traffic police have been deployed round-the-clock at sensitive areas starting from Veerasandra junction to Silk Board junction.
