Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived at the National Institute for Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) for the convocation and greeted the audience at NIMHANS with Yellarigu Namaskara (Salutations to everybody).
He is here to attend the convocation and will deliver the convocation address at NIMHANS.
It is for the first time that Mr. Modi arrived at NIMHANS for convocation. Around 107 students are receiving degrees in person and 23 in absentia. PhD is being awarded to 27 research scholars.
Union Minister’s Sadananda Gowda, Ananthkumar, Governor Vajubhai R. Vala along with Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda and Karnataka’s Minister for Medical Education, Sharan Prakash Patil have accompanied Mr. Modi.
Mr. Modi interacted with a few school children before leaving. During his speech, he had referred to them as his special guests. Coming down from the stage he asked them if they were happy being his guests and whether they were inspired seeing the graduating doctors. Students from Hombegowda Nagar Govt Boys High School and Smt Gangamma Hombegowda Nagar Girls High School were invited. Fifteen boys and 15 girls were invited upon the instruction of the PM. The students were thrilled. "Its a moment of pride for us," said Jyothi and Durgashree.
Mr. Modi said that he had asked for students to be special guests in all convocations because he wanted them to be inspired after seeing the graduate doctors.
At the occasion, Mr. Modi e-inaugurated the state-of-the-art MR Pet Scan center, first of its kind in the public sector. The center will enhance diagnoses of various complex neurological and psychiatric disorders in its entirety, giving information about both anatomical and functional details in real time. This center has been set up at a cost of Rs 40 cr.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has appealed to the Prime Minister to grant funds for NIMHANS north campus.
Union Health Minister N.P. Jadda says a New Mental Health Bill will replace the existing Mental Health Act, 1987.
The Prime Minister was here to attend the opening of Aero India 2015 show.
