Unhappy with the Horticulture Department imposing a ban on photo shoots and video shoots within Lalbagh and Cubbon Park, professional photographers have started using online platforms to request the department to reconsider its decision.
A petition is doing the rounds asking the department to revoke the ban. Photographer Lohit Rajkumar, who started a petition, said that it was unfair on the part of officials to ban photo shoots inside the lung spaces.
“On a normal day, at least 30 photographers can be seen in Lalbagh. It provides a perfect setting for taking portfolio, maternity and pre-wedding photographs. We were not misusing the place,” he said.
A month ago, the photographers were given a notice informing of the ban. “We were told that walkers had a problem with pre- and post-wedding photography, but we don’t know how it affects them. How can people be so intolerant?” said another photographer.
However, officials said that there is no question of revoking the ban. “The ban was imposed to stop the commercial use of a public space,” said M.R. Chandrashekar, Deputy Director, Lalbagh.
“Too many photographers with flash and reflectors started using the space. We also got complaints from walkers. Also, the usage of reflectors can disturb bees, putting visitors in danger. We had to take a decision to ban it,” he said, adding that nature photography and personal photography are allowed.
