A group of children, all aged below six years, who were left unattended for more than seven hours at an adoption centre in Nelamangala, were rescued early on Tuesday.
The Nelamangala police said that at least five children were at the adoption centre ‘Paraspara’, and a night duty attender had to look after them. She had to come around 6 p.m. but she did not stay back to take care of the children.
The children were left there all evening until some passersby realised that they were by themselves and informed the police around 1.30 a.m. They had allegedly not been given food.
Geeta Patil, District Child Protection Officer (DCPO), Bangalore Rural, said that because of the irresponsibility of the attender, she has ordered her suspension. She said that usually there were three attenders at the centre but on account of the festival, the centre only had one on Monday. The attender had claimed she left because of a personal emergency and had not informed anyone before she left the centre. However, no case has been registered.
