A man who was in an inebriated state was arrested for allegedly assaulting and abusing policemen on duty on Saturday night.

The accused, Panduranga, 32, who is the son of a retired assistant sub-inspector and an employee with an IT firm, was arrested and charged under sections 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) of the IPC. He has been remanded in judicial custody.

The police said Panduranga and his friends came out of a wine shop on Rajagopalanagar main road on Saturday at 9.30 p.m. while talking loudly. Unable to bear the nuisance, one of the local residents called up the police control room and complained about it.

PSI Shivaraj Patil and probationary PSI Basavaraj, who were on night patrol, came to the spot and asked the group to go home. Panduranga refused, and when the policemen tried to convince him, he manhandled Mr. Basavaraj in a fit of rage and then assaulted Mr. Patil, the police said.

A police Hoysala patroling team rushed to the spot and took him into custody.
