Karnataka plans a mega recruitment drive in which 14,948 assistant linemen will be appointed in three phases. This is to address the serious shortage of ground-level staff in the power sector

Announcing this at a press conference here on Monday, Energy Minister D.K. Shivakumar said that in the first phase, 8,080 assistant linemen would be recruited by August.

They would be selected on the basis of their SSLC marks, along with a physical fitness test that includes the ability of the aspirant to climb an eight-metre-long pole. Women can also apply, but neither would there be a reservation quota for them nor would there be a relaxation in physical fitness standards, he said.

Of the total sanctioned posts of 27,000 linemen, 14,752 are lying vacant. As many as 417 assistant engineers, 480 junior engineers and 15 accounts officers would be recruited, he said.

He said the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy had allotted 600 MW of solar energy projects to the State of which 300 MW each would be allotted to farmers and unemployed youth, if they have the required quantum of land in their names.

Replying to queries, the Minister said the power supply situation in the State was comfortable, and termed the interruptions in supply as “shutdown” due to maintenance works.

Selection is based on SSLC marks and a physical fitness test that includes the ability of the aspirant to climb an eight-metre-long pole
