Fighting for their ‘Right to breathe’, numerous residents of H.S.R. Layout came out in protest on Saturday against the “overburdened” organic waste segregation site where debris of garbage was making it “difficult” to breathe in the area.
The centre of their ire is the organic composting yard of the Karnataka Compost Development Corporation (KCDC) near Somasundarapalya Lake in Sector 2 of the HSR Layout.
The protestors, many of them residents of the numerous apartments that have come up in the area after the plant was set up in 1975, say the plant has been stretched beyond its capacity. Piles of debris and garbage remain unprocessed, while garbage trucks wait by the sides of the roads of the residential area. Leachate from the plant has polluted the lake, said the protestors.
They demanded a reduction in the quantum of waste that is being sent to the plant, while local council implement segregation of waste strictly.
The protest follows numerous parleys between residents, KCDC and Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), which had yielded little result.
