Led by the All India Agricultural Workers' Union, farmers from across the State descended on the city to demand better implementation of pro-farmer schemes, particularly the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employee Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS).
In a memorandum to the Government, the agitators said that several hundred crores of rupees wages are outstanding under the scheme.
Worse, several hundred gram panchayats in the State have not yet started implementing the scheme, the memorandum said.
The union demanded that the minimum wages in the State be hiked to match those fixed by the Governments of Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
In the two neighbouring States, agricultural workers are provided with provident fund and old age pension, the memorandum has pointed out.
