Unable to contain the chain-snatching spree in the city, the Bengaluru police have decided to deploy women police officers as a decoy to trap the chain-snatchers, who have had a free run so far.

Women officers will pose as homemakers and wear artificial jewellery to attract the attention of muggers, a circular issued by City Police Commissioner M.N. Reddi states.

The police have identified South and West divisions as areas where more chain-snatching incidents were reported. “We have asked the officers to venture out on the pretext of morning and evening walks wearing artificial jewellery,” a senior official said.

Police personnel in mufti have been deputed at strategic locations.

Meanwhile, the jurisdictional police have been asked to keep skeletal staff at the station and deploy others on the field. Two-wheelers belonging to two brands used by the thieves will be under watch.

The Central Crime Branch is analysing call records from the mobile towers where the crimes were reported. On June 11, ten chain-snatching cases were reported in South and West division. Another four were reported the consequent day.

Police officials have been told to keep a watch on youth spending huge amounts of cash in bars and places that have entertainment facilities.
