The Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (KSCPCR) has decided to issue summons to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) regarding the dog bite cases that have been reported in the city over the past fortnight.

Y. Mariswamy, in-charge chairperson of KSCPCR, said they would review the measures taken by the civic body and pass orders on the action that needs to be taken.

“A majority of the dog bite victims are children, as they are vulnerable. So, the commission has decided to ensure that all cases pertaining to dog bites are heard by the commission,” he said.

He said the commission would meet victims, or their families, and ensure that they get compensation.

Three cases of dog bites have been reported over the last fortnight. In one case, an 11-year-old boy succumbed to injuries after being attacked by a pack of dogs at Vibhutipura.

The BBMP has claimed to have sterilised 18,000 dogs this year. However, animal rights have raised questions over the effectiveness of the Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme.

Mayor R. Sampath Raj said that oral notices were given to street vendors, meat vendors and eateries over the disposal of waste. “We have told that strict action would be taken if they are found to be dumping waste in and around their premises,” he said. He also pointed out that BBMP officials were in the process of identifying pockets where there were a pack of dogs so that appropriate precautionary measures were taken.
