The body of Sagar Patil, 47, son of former MLA of Belagavi South Sambhajirao Patil, was found at Yeshwantpur Railway Station on Monday night.

A senior police officer from the railways said that the body was found 20 metres from the track. A passenger raised an alarm and notified the police. After the post-mortem, the body was handed over to the family on Tuesday afternoon.

Police said, “He had come to attend a court hearing along with his friends. They were returning to Belagavi in the Rani Chennamma Express,” said the police.

The train left City Railway Station around 9.15 p.m. and reached Yeshwantpur at 9.30 p.m. As the train was pulling out of the station, Sagar told his friends that he needed to go to the bathroom, but never returned. The friends later told the police that they searched the train and called on his cellphone, but got no response.

Police said, “We found his phone near his body. We checked his call records. After returning some of the calls, we discovered that he is the son of the former MLA of Belagavi South. He had sustained a severe head injury and had died on the spot.”

The city railway police said that his valuables were intact. They have taken up a case of unnatural death.
