The Bengaluru city station of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday (October 24) morning recorded a minimum temperature of 17.1 degrees Celsius, which was the lowest in the city in October in the last 10 years. On October 31, 2014, the temperature had dipped to 17.5 degrees.
The minimum temperature recorded at the Kempegowda International Airport station was 17.2 degrees, while it was 17 degrees at the HAL Airport station on Tuesday.
‘Radiation cooling’
According to the scientists at IMD Bengaluru, the dip in the temperature can be attributed to a phenomenon called “radiation cooling”, where the heat is radiated away from the earth in the night hours.
“In the absence of rain, there is a clear sky with no clouds leading to temperature drop during the night, known as radiation cooling. However, when it is cloudy, the temperature does not dip. As there was rainfall during the corresponding time last year, the temperature did not drop like this,” said A. Prasad, scientist, IMD Bengaluru.
Over next two days
The maximum temperature on Tuesday in Bengaluru was around 31.6 degrees Celsius. Partly cloudy skies with mist at some places during morning hours are likely in the next two days, the weatherman said.
