If you want to see the striking ruins of UNESCO World Heritage Site Hampi come alive with contemporary world music, watch the digital release of a four-minute-long video ‘Days in the Sun’. Bindu and Ambi, children of violin maestro L. Subramaniam, released their first single last week. The music video is available across digital platforms.
“This is the first song post the formation of our group SubraMania and we are thrilled to have made our musical creation public, as it has the approval of our father, who has liked the fresh flow of the bowing and the vocals,” said Ambi. They are the grandchildren of legendary musician V. Lakshminarayana.
The song has vocals by Bindu and violin by Ambi. It also brings in the Western piano and treads on the Sindhubhairavi scale along with the Tambura and Khanjira. “We have also brought in varied tonalities with Latin percussion Kajon, the guitar, piano, bass and vocals with English lyrics from me with a signature global temperament in its collective rendering,” said Bindu.
The idea behind bringing up creative ventures through SubraMania is to create space for experimentation with different genres that inspire us, she explains. “We did not want any kind of compartmentalisation in our music, but wanted to feel comfortable by our inclusive tendencies and welcome an influence with any other kind that appeals to our senses. That’s what our new music video too is all about,” says Bindu.
Speaking about the way the song evolved, Ambi said, “What gave the project a rather instinctive push was the sudden demise of jazz pianist George Duke who often played alongside my father. The song is in the background of this deep sense of loss. The ruins of Hampi added a sympathetic augmentation to our mood.”
