The audience at the Ravindra Kalakshetra here on Sunday were treated to a powerful and roaring tabla performance as 100 percussionists performed simultaneously on the stage.
In a first of its kind venture, Sri Sadguru Music Academy organised this event, which saw students of Pandit Satish Hampiholi, Pandit Veeranna Heeregowda, Pandit Hemanth Kulkarni and Pandit Rupesh Kulkarni participate.
The composition had percussionists aged between five and 50.
They came from diverse backgrounds and professions — students, software engineers, housewives and businessmen.
Pandit Venkatesh Akkoda, Venkatesh Purohit, Bhavani Shankar and Rohit led the 100 percussionists through the performance. Purna Achar and Chandana Ramesh also enthralled the crowd with their Kathak performance towards the end.
The chief guest at the event, D.V. Shailendra Kumar, judge of the High Court of Karnataka, said that the performance “reverberated right through his heart” and called the performance exhilarating.
‘Cultural emancipation’
Also witnessing the spectacle, retired Supreme Court judge M.N. Venkatachaliah said, “Such performances give hope about the cultural future of the country. And there will be a safe future in such cultural emancipation.”
The event was conceptualised by Pt. Hampiholi.
A volume, “Drut”, which is a terminology of percussion, was released to commemorate the occasion.
Pandit Veeranna Heeregowda, Pandit Hemanth Kulkarni, Pandit Rupesh Kulkarni, Baguru Markandeya, author and artist and K. Revanna, theatre personality, were facilitated.
