Software engineer held for abetting wife's suicide

The Mahalakshmi Layout police arrested a software engineer on the charge of abetting the suicide of his wife, Shwetha Koti (25), who was also a software engineer.

Vinay Morabad was remanded in judicial custody for 15 days.

Shwetha, a TCS employee, hanged herself at her house in Mahalakshmipura on Sunday night and her suicide came to light on Monday morning.

The police said she ended her life when her husband was away at his hometown. The couple, both from Dharwad, were married for 18 months and had a nine-month-old baby. Shwetha left no death note, but her parents alleged she was driven to suicide due to harassment by Vinay. The parents have filed a complaint against him for dowry harassment and abetment to suicide.

H.S. Revanna, Deputy Commissioner of Police, North Division, told The Hindu the arrest was based on the parents' complaint. He had allegedly appropriated her new car, money, ATM cards, jewellery and other valuables, the official said.

Shwetha was contemplating divorce but her parents had persuaded her to give the marriage another chance, Mr. Revenna said.
