No official holiday has been declared for schools and colleges on Tuesday, said Chief Secretary Kaushik Mukherjee.

He claimed that the former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, who passed away on Monday, had said earlier that he did not want a holiday to be declared on the day after he died.

However, the Private School Managements’ Association has urged schools to declare a holiday, following which many schools have sent messages to parents that they would be closed. The State has declared seven-day mourning and all official functions stand cancelled during this period.

President Pranab Mukherjee, who is in the State, is likely to cut short his visit.

The programme at NIMHANS where Mr. Mukherjee was to inaugurate various facilities has been cancelled.
