In a crackdown on wheeling and racing on motorways, the traffic police have started targeting mechanics and garage owners who modify bikes to enable them to go faster.
They tracked down and seized 13 motorcycles based on information provided by such mechanics.
Drag racing
“It is difficult to catch motorists indulging in drag racing. The best way to track them down is through mechanics and garages where bikes are modified," a senior police officer said.
Rash and negligent driving, and drag racing not only endanger lives of the motorists but also pedestrians, especially children and senior citizens, he said.
On Friday, the police called on mechanics and visited garages across the city to get details of bikers who get their vehicle modified.
Based on information provided by them, they tracked down 13 bikers and seized the vehicles.
Four bike owners were arrested and efforts are on to track down the rest.
“We have asked the mechanics to alert the traffic police if any bikers approach them to get their vehicles modified,” he said.
“Such drives would continue to contain the menace,” M.A. Saleem, Additional Commissioner of Police (traffic), said.
