Viskhapatnam district has stood first in the country in effective implementation of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS).
Collector Pravin Kumar and Kalyana Chakravarthi, former Project Director of District Water Management Association received the national award from Union Rural Development Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, at a function in New Delhi on Tuesday.

“With 3.28 lakh job cards for the families accounting for 5.8 lakh people, 225 lakh man-days of works were created. Wages worth ₹297.7 crore were disbursed the the district in 2016-17 fiscal and ₹373.45 crore in 2017-18 financial year, making the district achieving the top rank in the country,” an official release said here on Tuesday.
Works related to laying of roads in 1089 km, 663 anganwadi buildings, 1,345 km of avenue plantation, horticulture in 4,593 acres and 29,694 farm ponds and coffee gardens in 20,991 acres were undertaken under the MGNREGS, it said.
