Power supply restored to Visakhapatnam Steel Plant

October 16, 2014 04:26 pm | Updated May 23, 2016 04:00 pm IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

AP Transco supplied power to Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited to enable the corporate entity of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant to revive its operations in phases.

The Navratna company needs at least 60 MW to launch captive power generation from its turbo generators. It has capacity to produce 315 MW.

Due to severe damage caused by Cyclone Hudhud to its infrastructure, the management shutdown the operations completely on Sunday.

The restoration of power gave some respite to the RINL management, which had its fingers crossed after shutting down the operations, as closing it beyond 24 hours expose them to a volatile situation.

VSP, which is going for disinvestment by offloading10 per cent of government’s equity shortly, stores several hazardous gases and metal and the fall in temperatures in all the coke oven batteries gave sleepless nights to the management.

A RINL official thanked Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu for responding immediately after its Chairman-cum-Managing Director P. Madhusudan briefed him about the magnitude of the situation.
