Chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Environment and Forests T. Subbarami Reddy has said that the Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy has consented to inaugurate a massive tree plantation project conceived by him to tackle industrial pollution in the city in December. The project was conceived by Mr. Reddy when he visited industrial units during October 19 to 21.
Under the scheme, 40 lakh trees will be planted with the involvement of local industries.
The tree plantation will cover all the 72 municipal wards in the city.
Industries including RINL, HPCL Visakha Refinery, NTPC Simhadri Power Plant, Hindusthan Shipyard and Naval Dry Dock will plant one lakh trees each apart from 2 lakh trees by the Visakhapatnam Port Trust and another 1 lakh trees by BHPV, Hindusthan Zinc, Essar Hygrade Pellets and others combined.
The industries will not only plant trees but also take the responsibility of maintaining them. All the industries together will plant 8 lakh trees per year and in five years 40 lakh trees will be planted.
District Collector Lav Agarwal, GVMC Commissioner B. Ramanjaneyulu, VUDA Vice-Chairman Kona Sasidhar and Pollution Control Board member-secretary Dana Kishore, under the Chairmanship of AP State Pollution Control Board Chairman Janaki Kondepi, are all involved in the formulation of the greenery project.
