May 24, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:57 am IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

What they started four and half years ago realising the need for low-cost skill development programme for ITI, polytechnic and B.Tech qualified candidates from the local area is today getting wide acclaim from the industry.

As a pro-active measure, Visakha Container Terminal Private Limited, a BOT operator of Visakhapatnam Port, set up Visakha Institute of Port Management to offer certain diploma programme in January 2011.

“As the courses were not popular we had to contact all those concerned to inform them about the job-ready courses started by us. Today, almost all who study at the not-for-profit institute are either placed by us or some other BOT operator in the port sector,” a VCTPL official told The Hindu on Saturday.

The VIPM will launch admissions for its sixth batch on May 25. In each batch, 45 students are trained by faculty drawn up with rich experience in the port sector. It imparts courses viz. diploma in port operations and management, PG diploma in port equipment maintenance, diploma in port equipment operations (heavy duty license compulsory).

Candidates with B. Tech/graduation/polytechnic/ITI in any discipline are eligible to take the relevant courses. “As the port sector is growing very fast and there are lot of openings with BOT operators due to corporatisation, we want to help the local youth for adding value to their educational qualification,” the official said. Details regarding the courses can be obtained by dialling Rajasekhar on 9247426797 during working hours.
