Green norms for affordable housing

The Ministry of Urban Housing and Poverty Alleviation has agreed to make Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) norms as basic guidelines for affordable housing all over the country, Prem C Jain, Chairman of IGBC, has said.

Launching the Visakhapatnam chapter of IGBC at a meeting organised by CII on Friday, he said the Commissioner of Kendriya Vidyalayas and Navodaya schools had agreed to make all 1,600 schools into green schools. The Ministry of HRD had asked IGBC to come out with a model of green school. He stressed the importance of giving incentives to promote green buildings to realise the goal of creating 50 billion sft of building in the next 30 years.

He launched the local chapter with Vijay Nirman CMD S. Vijay Kumar as Chairman and K. Leela Prasad as Co-Chairman. He complimented students of GITAM School of Architecture for brining out a good newsletter and described them as future green ambassadors.

Visakhapanam Lok Sabha member K. Haribabu offered Rs.5 lakh to make one municipal school here as green school.

Architects should come out with a plan for construction of green homes. He invited suggestions from IGBC on preventing coal dust pollution of Visakhapatnam Port Trust.
