The death of Delhi gang-rape victim at a hospital in Singapore sparked widespread protests and rallies here on Saturday.
A protest was organised under the aegis of the Progressive Organisation for Women in front of the Gandhi statute at Asilametta. POW president M. Lakshmi alleged that the government, instead of taking steps to remove the feeling of insecurity among people, was promoting caste, community, and gender differences. She also deplored the ‘commodification’ of women and projecting men as ‘heroes’.
It was evident that the perpetrators of the crime had indulged in the act after consuming an overdose of alcohol. The government was promoting the sale of liquor and indirectly contributing to the growth of crime against women. She sought measures to ban liquor.
Rallies were also taken out by students of schools and colleges to protest against the incident.
