Campaign against environment pollution

Published - June 04, 2014 10:36 pm IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

In a bid to raise awareness on environmental pollution among women and children residing in pollution-prone localities, the women’s wing of Green Climate launched a 10-day intensive campaign here on Wednesday.

Distributing pamphlets and presenting photo exhibition, explaining the harmful effects of the constant exposure to polluted air, a 10-member team is all set to reach out to people in Gajuwaka, Pedagantyada, Parawada, Atchutapuram, and Rambilli mandals. Their mission is to meet the locals and educate them on how their lives have been impacted by environmental pollution. Since the global issue is affecting women at large, especially pregnant women, the campaign aims at educating them. “Marking the World Environment Day, we have taken up the initiative of reaching out to people at micro level and strive to bring about a change. The recent survey which we have carried also indicates that pregnant women living in pollution-prone areas run a higher risk of giving birth to babies with birth defect,” J.V. Ratnam of Green Climate said.

The campaign that concludes on June 15 will see the team members, including Sirisha, Rajeswari and Sushma, heading to the local colleges, universities and other places.
