The overhead sun and lack of shade at the ‘Swachh Bharat’ programme, organised by the Vizag Journalists’ Forum (VJF) at Kendriya Vidyalaya-Waltair here on Wednesday, drove home the message of the importance of growing more trees.

Divisional Railway Manager Anil Kumar, KV-Waltair Principal Purohit and VJF leaders had to bear the slanting rays of the morning sun for quite some time as they sat in the open as the students performed on stage. Thankfully, a few of the trees seem to have braved the very severe cyclone Hudhud and stood gracefully. A section of the participants managed to get chairs under these trees while a majority of the others had to bear the brunt of the sun. The skits and songs by students must have made them all realise the importance of protecting trees.

DRM Anil Kumar commended the children for their thought-provoking messages and the VJF initiative for promoting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s pet project ‘Swachh Bharat’ apart from undertaking the ‘sapling plantation’ programme in association with the school authorities. He congratulated the students who excelled in sports and other extra-curricular activities during the year.

The Principal gave a brief report on the activities of the school. He said that a plantation drive was started in the school much before Hudhud.

VJF president G. Srinu Babu recalled the efforts of the school in saving some of the fallen trees and protecting the environment. He congratulated the students on their achievement at the state and national level sports.

VJF secretary S. Durga Rao spoke.

Later, the DRM and other dignitaries planted saplings on the school premises and also cleaned the campus as part of the ‘Swachh Bharat’ programme.
