GVMC tax dues stand at 82.98 cr.

Every time GVMC's property tax collection is poor, the attention turns to the long-pending dues it has from various quarters. They stand at a whopping Rs.82.98 crore. The GVMC terms it ‘uncollectible demand.' When there was a steep increase in property tax during the just concluded financial year, it was demanded that the GVMC should collect the dues rather than going in for an increase.

Under the ‘uncollectible' come the tax caught in court cases. While the general cases account for Rs.9.7 crore, the steel plant for Rs.34.14 crore. On a court order, it has been paying 50 per cent of the tax, about Rs.6.92 crore.

Various government departments owe Rs.16.38 crore and disputed demand involving ownership of properties stands at Rs.22.75 crore taking the total to Rs.82.98 crore.

Arrears, tax payable but not paid, till 2009-10 is also sizeable. Of the Rs.67.48 crore arrears, only Rs.7.22 crore has been realised up to March 31, 2011.

Of the current demand of around Rs.139.65 crore, Rs.70.62 crore has been paid leaving a balance of Rs.69.03 crore.

The total collection as on Friday was Rs.77.84 crore or 62.71 per cent.
