Andhra University tennis team won the South Zone inter-university tournament organised by Annamalai University at Chidambaram during the first week of January.
It was after a gap of 30 years that AU won the South Zone tennis title. This year, the ream consisting of R.V.K. Sudarshan (Samata College), who led the team, junior international S.V. Abhishek (AU College of Engineering), D. Vasu and S. Vamsikrishna Raj (SAVE College) and Ch. Jnaneswar (GITAM Institute of Management), triumphed in the final and earned the right to participate in the all-India inter-university inter-zone tournament to be held at Hissar (Haryana) from January 22 to 27.
The team manager was G. Srinivasu of GITAM college and coach was M. Laxmaiah of AQJ Degree College.
Abhishek was declared a star player of the tournament.
He was earlier No. 2 in the under-16 rankings of All-India Tennis Association and won the School Games Federation of India’s under-16 title.
Andhra University Vice-Chancellor B. Satyanarayana and Registrar P.V.G.D. Prasada Reddy, felicitated the team. Director of Physical Education M. Syambabu, secretary of AU College of Engineering Sports Committee N. Vijay Mohan were present.
