The Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL), among the oldest public sector shipyards in the country, has undertaken clean and green energy initiatives by inaugurating a 2MW rooftop solar power system, here on Friday.

Inaugurating the plant, Collector Pravin Kumar said other public sector units in the city and elsewhere should emulate HSL.

The plant was set up by the CleanMax Solar, India’s largest rooftop solar panel developer. HSL Chairman and Managing Director Rear Admiral (retd) L.V. Sarat Babu and Chief Operating Officer of CleanMax Solar Umakant Shende were present.

The system, claimed to be the largest rooftop solar plant in the State at a single location, will help the HSL save ₹48 lakh per annum in power costs, while reducing carbon footprint. The rooftop solar plant will meet around 35% of the HSL’s total power demand, generating 28 lakh of units of clean energy per annum.

Seven buildings on the HSL premises have been equipped with solar panels. The project was constructed under the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) Rooftop Solar Scheme. Under the scheme, CleanMax Solar invests, constructs, owns and operates the solar plants as part of a long-term power purchase agreement.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Umakant Shende said the project had been completed in a record time of six months or so.

“The HSL had taken up the green initiative to set up solar power system to contribute to the growth of the State and country. We want to enhance the capacity to 4 MW in future,” Mr. L.V. Sarat Babu said.

S.K Mishra, Director of Solar Energy Corporation of India, said the Union Government had set a target of achieving 40 GW of solar power capacity by 2022.

GVMC Commissioner M. Hari Narayanan said the civic body was generating 4 MW of solar energy at present and the tendering process had been completed to add 5.5 MW more.

Police Commissioner M.C. Laddha said HSL had achieved remarkable progress in the past few years.
