Refusing to budge: Students of Government Polytechnic staging a protest, in Vijayawada on Thursday.

The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) officials made a futile attempt to foreclose the Government Polytechnic here on Thursday.

Officials, following orders of the municipal council, arrived at the institution in the morning to take over.

Failure to pay tax

Officials said the institution had not paid property tax for the last 17 years.

The officials said the taxes and the interest amounted to about ₹6 crore.

However, the students and the staff staged protests asking the officials to back off.

Due to pressure from the students, officials withdrew the decision of foreclosing the property.
