The city will witness top class volleyball encounters for five days from October 8 at P.B. Siddhartha Arts and Science College Grounds as South Zone Inter-University Men’s Tournament gets under way, according to Krishna University Vice-Chancellor V. Venkaiah.
Speaking to mediapersons on Tuesday, he said the tournament will be organised in knockout-cum-league format. “We are fixing floodlights in two courts and the evening matches will go up to 9.00 p.m.” He said entries were received from 90 universities and the some of the top teams in action would be last year’s winners SRM, Bharathiar, Calicut and Satyabhama. “However, Manipal, Karunya, Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University and Sastra are not in the fray.”
Mr. Venkaiah said that 50 volleyball officials, along with 50 physical directors and 100 volunteers will work round-the-clock for smooth conduct of the event.
“Nearly 1,000 players will be accommodated at Siddhartha men’s hostel, P.B. Siddhartha Junior, Degree and PG Colleges. We have prepared six courts, four for match purpose and two for practice.”
The tournament will be inaugurated by Minister for Human Resource Development Ganta Srinivasa Rao. Minister for Irrigation Devineni Umamaheswara Rao, Minister for Health Kamineni Srinivas, Minister for BC Welfare & Empowerment Kollu Ravindra, Deputy Speaker Mandali Buddha Prasad MPs, MLAs and MLCs, will grace the function.
Krishna University had organised South Zone Inter-University Tennis (men) Tournament in 2012 at Andhra Loyola College and South Zone Inter University Women Kabaddi Tournament last year at KVR College, Nandigama.
