The Union Ministry of Urban Development has commissioned a survey of sanitation scenario in 75 major cities including 53 with a population of above 10 lakh each and State capitals. Vijayawada city is one of the 75 cities that will be surveyed. This is the first such survey since the launch of Swachh Bharat Mission in October last.
In the proposed survey for rating of 75 major cities accounting for over 50 per cent of country’s total urban population, solid waste management is being given 6 per cent weightage followed by 15 per cent each for availability and use of household individual toilets and public and community toilets. Under Swachh Bharat Mission, about Rs. 37,000 crore of the project cost of Rs. 62,009 crore is to be incurred on solid waste management.
The VMC clears more than 550 MT of garbage every day. The city is divided into 34 Sanitary Divisions and about 2500 staff, of which 5 per cent are from 74 DWCUA groups, are involved in cleaning the roads every day.
“The total waste generated is around 550 M.T. and this is transported to Excel Plant, Sri Ram Energy Systems Plant and Bio Methanization plant for recycling into manure and power generation,” says VMC official website.
