The State government has intensified its efforts to ensure supply of water to Krishna Delta farmers with the onset of monsoon, marking the commencement of kharif season.

Accordingly, steps have been initiated to complete pending works related to the Pulichintala project to enable storage of 42 tmcft water before the onset of monsoon.

Irrigation Minister Devineni Umamaheswara Rao recalled the difficulties faced by farmers every year because of the delay in release of water from the Nagarjunasagar project to the Krishna Delta. The Minister said the government had initiated talks with Joint Collectors of Nalgonda and Guntur districts relating to release of funds for payment of compensation to the Pulichintala project-affected people.

The government would ensure full storage in the reservoirs by taking into account the recommendations made by the dam safety committee and release water to seedbeds from the commencement of the season.

He recalled the way in which the government could provide 13 tmcft water to the Krishna Delta during the previous rabi season and save the standing crops. The Minister said it had become a challenge for the government to usher in reforms in the irrigation sector for ensuring adequate water to farmers for two crops.

The government has allocated Rs.140 crore for completing different lift irrigation projects across the State within the stipulated time.
