Alleging that the V.R. Siddhartha Engineering College management did not respond properly to the mishap in which its three students were drowned in Krishna a few days ago, its students staged a dharna on the campus at Kanuru on Thursday.
Three final year students – J. Rajesh, B. Lal Babu Naik and V. Srikanth – of Civil Engineering branch of the college drowned in Krishna at Madduru village, while taking up their project work. The students alleged that the college management which sent the students to the river for study on ‘water resources’ did not allocate even a guide .
Criticising the management for not responding to the mishap, they raised slogans demanding compensation to the bereaved families. College principal A.V. Ratna Prasad and director K. Mohan Rao tried to pacify the agitating students, but in vain.
“We launched protest after holding discussions with the college staff. We insist that the Siddhartha Academy announce ex gratia immediately,” a student alleged.
The students called off the agitation only after the Siddhartha Academy secretary P. Lakshman Rao announced ex gratia of Rs. 5 lakh each to the family of the three students who drowned in the river.
