Leaders of the CPI, the CPI (M), the YSR Congress Party, and other like-minded parties and associations have decided to launch a united struggle to mount pressure on the government for construction of a flyover on NH-9, at the foothill of Indrakeeladri.

At a roundtable here on Saturday, the leaders blamed the government for the “delay” in taking up the project. They criticised Vijayawada MP Lagadapati Rajagopal for trying to gain political mileage over the issue.

CPI (M) city secretary Ch. Babu Rao said 80,000 vehicles were moving in the city and people were facing severe problem on the narrow road at the foothill.

It was unfortunate that some local leaders with vested interests were causing obstructions to the project, he said.

“There are bypass roads and flyover bridges in almost all the towns and cities, but, for Vijayawada, there is no bypass road and the leaders are linking the flyover issue to the inner ring road,” Mr. Babu Rao said.

CPI city unit secretary D. Shankar said the council had resolved to construct flyover at Durga temple in 1995, 2000, and in 2005. Minister K. Parthasarathi had sanctioned Rs.36 crore for the project, which was not utilised.

Even for the flyover sanctioned at the Benz Circle, no plan had been prepared, Mr. Shankar said, and demanded that the government take up the two projects immediately.

Former MLA Nasar Vali, YSRCP leader Abdul Khader, and Tax Payers’ Association member V. Srinivasa Rao spoke.
