A mixed response was seen here from the public on purchases hours before the Goods and Services Tax (GST) came into force on Friday midnight.
People queued up at the Stamps and Registration Offices to register their properties sans GST on Friday, which is also ‘Saptami’ an auspicious day. Some showrooms announced offers to clear inventory as there was no tax from the government on products manufactured a year ago. There was not much rush in jewellery showrooms. With rumours floating that there will be heavy taxes on goods from July 1, many people thronged shops to purchase electrical and electronic appliances.
“There was no GST impact on bullion market as the tax on gold will be 3%. Normal sales were noticed at our jewellery showroom in the last two months,” said Anjaneya Jewellers owner Vadlamudi Venkat Rao.
E-City proprietor S. Vasu said sales of electric and electronic goods were high for the last few days ahead of GST implementation. To avoid GST, people went on a shopping spree buying air-conditioners, washing machines, televisions and other goods, he said.
“Public are calculating the impact of the newly introduced GST on each product such as gold, textiles and other material. Prices of some goods will certainly go up and there will be no hike on some products,” said Anjaneya Jewellers manager V. Srinivas.
Normal sale of mobiles
Big-C manager N. Rajesh said sale of mobile phones was normal as GST impact was less on cell phones.
