Aqua Devils Welfare Association (ADWA), situated on 3,000 square yards on the banks of the Krishna, deserves exemption from land pooling for the capital city formation as it is a non-profit outfit promoting good health among denizens, according to MP from Narasapur Gokaraju Gangaraju.
Speaking to The Hindu on the sidelines of the closing ceremony of the annual summer camp on Sunday, he said that Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu alone can bring smiles on the faces of hundreds of children who had been pursuing swimming, yoga, and other sports at the complex for more than 10 years.
The association has submitted a proposal seeking exemption of its premises from land polling to the Deputy Collector, who in turn has handed it (the proposal) over to the Commissioner of Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA).
“This association has produced more than 2,000 quality swimmers, both in Krishna and Guntur districts, in 10 years. ADWA, with 1,600 members, is an outfit that promotes swimming among youngsters to stay healthy and fit. In fact, this place is an appropriate place for all sorts of water sports for future generation,” said Mr. Raju, who is life president of the association.
Mangalagiri MLA A. Ramakrishna Reddy, representing YSR Congress, reiterated the opinion of Mr. Raju and said he would use his good offices to convince the Chief Minister to announce the exemption order.
“The city is blessed with the Krishna and sporting events like long distance swimming and river crossing would help youth grow strong and confident. It quells the fear factor,” Mr. Reddy felt.
Mr. Raju also said the venue was also useful for Fire Department and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) for training and mock drills.
He asked the government to exempt ashrams functioning on the river bank as they promoted spirituality and peace.
