Zilla Parishad Chairperson Gadde Anuradha on Sunday said that though the government and ZP schools in villages were equipped with playgrounds, they, instead of nurturing sports, were given out on lease for other purposes.

“Acres of land were donated by the village elders to nurture a healthy younger generation. But unfortunately they are used for agriculture. Efforts are on to encourage sports and games in villages by sprucing up quality playfields,” the ZP Chairperson said while participating in the valedictory of South Zone Inter-University Men’s Volleyball Tournament that concluded at Siddhartha Arts and Science College.

Ms. Anuradha asked the physical education teachers to make use of the games period properly by imparting the basics of sports and games to the students.

She asked the volleyball administrators to promote beach volleyball as Andhra Pradesh had several seashores and beaches.

“Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu is keen to developing tourism and beach volleyball, if promoted well, will attract several tourists.”

Mayor Koneru Sridhar said the annual youth festival by the corporation was shelved owing to dearth of funds for more than 10 years.

Krishna University (KRU) Vice-Chancellor V. Venkaiah thanked all the physical directors of various colleges for making mega event a grand success. District Sports Development Officer R. Ramakrishna, Krishna District Olympic Association K.P. Rao, Acharya Nagarjuna University physical director Y. Kishore, Krishna University Registrar Surya Chandra Rao, former Sri Krishnadevaraya University physical director Chinnappa Reddy and others took part in the function.
