M. Thambi Durai, Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha, urged the Salem Railway Division to regularise the services of the new special passenger trains introduced between Salem and Karur.
He also urged for operating the existing two pairs of passenger trains running in the Salem – Karur section on all the seven days in a week. These trains were till recently operated only on six days, and the Railways recently introduced them on a temporary basis on Sundays too.
Mr. Thambi Durai along with State Industries Minister P. Thangamani, P. R. Sundaram, MP, and V. Dakshinamoorthy, Namakkal Collector, travelled in the newly introduced passenger train from Namakkal to Karur and listened to the grievances of the commuters on Sunday.
Poor patronage
Shubranshu, Divisional Railway Manager, who accompanied the Deputy Speaker, said that passenger trains had poor patronage on Sundays. However, Mr. Thambi Durai said that over a period of time these trains will attract more commuters and urged him to continue the service. The DRM informed them that running the passenger trains with DEMU rakes will immensely benefit the travelling public.

The Salem Division has already submitted a proposal for operating DEMU train service from Salem to Thanjavur via Namakkal, Karur and Tiruchi. Mr. Thambi Durai assured to take up the matter with the Railway Ministry.
Mr. Sundaram demanded laying of parallel road connecting Senthamangalam road and Thuraiyur road at Namakkal Railway Station. The DRM said that the division has already submitted a proposal for laying a road. However, Mr. Sundaram said that the proposed road will be too narrow and demanded a wide road.
Mr. Shubhranshu assured to go for re-estimate and submit a fresh proposal to the Railway Board.
