Move to divest insurance companies condemned

The Madurai Region of the General Insurance Employees' Association (MRGIEA) organised a street corner meeting in front of Khadi Craft in the city on Wednesday evening to condemn the Centre's move to divest the shares of public sector general insurance companies and foreign direct investment in the retail trade.

Members of the Association participated in the event, which was inaugurated by P. Sathyanathan, vice president, MRGIEA. Speaking on the occasion he said that both the decisions will immensely harm the interest of the whole society.

He underlined the importance of protecting the public sector. K. Jayaraman, district president of the MRGIEA, presided.

G. Balachandran, state vice president of the Bank Employees Confederation, delivered the valedictory address. K. Sampath Kumar of General Insurance Officials Union, A. Arivukadal, joint secretary of ICEU, S. Rajendran, secretary of the NFGIE, and S. Muthu, Officials Association, New India Assurance, spoke explaining the demands.
