Good response to The Hindu In School Cello Handwriting contest

More than 300 boys and girls entered the regional finals

The advent of personal computers and latest communication gadgets including smart phones may have dramatically changed the way we communicate through writing. But, the skill of handwriting remains an important aspect in primary, middle and higher secondary education. The overwhelming response to The Hindu In School Cello Handwriting Wizard regional finals held in Tiruchi on Sunday once again proved the point louder.

The auditorium of Cauvery College for Women was abuzz with the enthusiastic school children, who came from different areas of the Tiruchi region on Sunday.

More than 300 boys and girls, who were selected in the school level contest, made it to the regional finals.

Though many of them had not properly learnt calligraphy, they left no stone unturned to present legible, neat and stylish handwriting to showcase their skills.

The handwriting competition, aimed at encouraging and recognising good handwriting skills, was held in two categories - junior and senior. Though a few schools in Tiruchi and Karur did well, it was Lakshmi Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Manaparai took the limelight in both categories.

Out of six chosen for the finals, three were from the school.

A three-member jury led by S. Prasanth Kumar, a calligraphy expert from Bishop Heber College, selected the winners.

In Junior category S. Narmatha (Class VII) of Lakshmi Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Manaparai, won the title. V. Swetha (VII) of Chellammal Vidyalaya, Tiruchi finished second, while the third prize went to B. Dharshini (VII) of Cheran Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Karur.

L. Kanmani (IX) of Lakshmi Matriculation Higher Secondary School won the title in the senior category.

While M. Chitra Priya of the same school bagged the second prize, K. Santhose Kumar (VIII) of Cheran Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Vennaimalai, Karur, secured the third prize.

J.T. Venkateswarlu, Post Master General, Central Region, and G. Natarajan, Director, Postal Services, Central Region, distributed prizes to the winners.

V. Ramanathan alias Sekar, Secretary, College Governing Council, and V. Sujatha, Principal, Cauvery College, Tiruchi, offered felicitations.
